Castle Howard from near the lake.

Castle Howard
16th September 2015.
A trip to Castle Howard found us exploring an area at the southern end of the upper lake. Through a gap we spotted this view. The house and central cupola looked wonderful in this setting, the sun lighting up the grass as squirrels hopped by. We chatted with a lady walking her long haired dachshund stopped to chat. We talked of another artist whom we both knew and like, who is based in York. The detail on this picture is limited, as it is all done en plein air, however I am happy with it. It is interesting to mix techniques, sometimes, being more detailed with a pencil or pen and ink wash better reflects detail. I still like to do this occasionally, especially to record street scenes as historical records. Swifts and martins are still with us but will be off soon.  Later in the courtyard we sat down and had coffee and cake outside, sitting in the sun. We watched the many visitors passing as we sat, while at our feet chaffinches took advantage of scattered crumbs.
